narrative from soil

earthworm performs its prayer
call under a sapling tower, faces

the west because the west
is where the sun teaches

a fluency in its cross-
section, a recital of how well

gravity keeps it together, respecting
the billowed flag hung

on the topography of high-rise
stalk. earthworm burrows are fictional

differences between left
and leaving, space reserved only

for pilgrimage to history, a
luxury in demand in lieu of

maturing. earthworm fasts again
avoids aroma of rotten food

and spends time aspiring
giving alms to ancestors.
